Rise Offers New Attorney Services - (2/13/2019)

Rise (the dba of SOS Shelter, Inc.) celebrates its 40th anniversary of providing trauma-informed domestic violence services this year.  SOS Shelter was one of the first domestic violence shelters to open in New York State and provides refuge, food, clothing, toiletries and other services to 245 adults and children annually. The agency also offers advocacy services, group and individual therapeutic counseling, a 24-hour hotline, and community education.

The organization is looking to the future to continue providing comprehensive services.  Rise was awarded a five-year grant from the New York State Office of Victim Services to provide trauma-informed legal services to survivors of domestic violence.  Rise is contracting with Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. to offer a full-time attorney on staff.  Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York has partnered with Rise since 2004 to provide civil legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence with federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) funds. 

Donielle Maier has been selected to provide representation to victims on a range of issues, including family offense, child support, and custody.  Donielle is currently a family court attorney and has been with Legal Aid for over three years.

What is domestic violence?

Domestic Violence is a pattern of coercive behavior. This pattern can include abuse of various sorts of one family member by another including:

Perpetrators of domestic violence have a goal to establish and maintain power and control over their partners and/or other family members.

This violence affects people in every racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic group and includes people of all ages who have lived together or who have had an intimate relationship.

Domestic violence often escalates in severity and frequency over time and can have serious health and psychological ramifications.
